Why Mariposa School of Skating?

The Mariposa School of Skating is a full service training centre that offers top level instruction and programs for every age and level of skater. Our expert staff deliver year round programs that are designed to allow skaters to progress from learning to skate to the elite levels of international competitive skating. We welcome skaters of all ages and skating disciplines from our local area or around the world to train with us for any length of time. Our Internationally renowned school is THE destination for skaters looking to improve their skating!

Winning legacy and bright future

Founded in Orillia, Ontario in 1973 by Doug Leigh and Tom Harrison, the school moved to Barrie in 1988 to accommodate the needs of world class skaters while establishing a campus at the Allandale Recreation Centre. Home to National Champions, Olympic medallists and World Champions from around the world, the school has seen success in Singles, Ice Dance and Pairs with champions like Brian Orser, Elvis Stojko, Jeff Buttle, Jennifer Robinson, Jacinthe Lariviere & Lenny Faustino.

David Islam and Paul Matheson became the co-owners in June 2017 to continue the strong legacy that has been built at the Mariposa School of Skating.

Summer School

Skaters and coaches of all levels are welcome to join our International, World, and Olympic coaching staff.  Our summer program includes on and off ice sessions, group lessons and training environment that has been home to Olympic and World medallist’s.

Summer 2019 Ballet/Dance

Summer Camp 2019

The Mariposa March Break camp is the only skating camp in the area to offer multi sport participation from Olympic and World level coaches.  Hosted at the Allandale Recreation Centre, a state of the art facility which offers a multitude of recreation and training services.  Spend your summer improving your physical development while learning valuable skills on land, on ice and in water!

43rd Annual Seminar

The Mariposa Seminar is an informative and motivational week for coaches and skaters to learn new techniques or train existing ones.  The seminar runs daily 8am-5pm  with on and off ice classes.  Each day is a different lesson for the skaters and coaches as well as the opportunity to mingle and interact with participating skaters and coaches. Daily group lessons cover:

  • Jump and Spin Technique
  • Edge, Turn and Artistic Classes
  • Ballet, Dance, Flexibility and Strength
  • Off ice Jump class
  • Lecture series
Daily group lessons cover dynamic warm-up, jumps, spins and edges while choreography, ballet, flexibility and strength classes are rotated throughout the week to enhance your skater's training. (Video recording of the sessions is permitted) Additionally, there is extra ice that you can purchase if your skater would like to practice what they have learned during the day. While there are no group lessons during this extra time, some Mariposa coaches may be available for private lessons. For lessons please contact the coaches directly. (see coaches tab)

Synchro Development Series

Spring Synchro Poster We are very excited to announce the first annual Spring Synchro Development Series at Mariposa! Join us in April for three exciting sessions focusing on synchro skills, skating skills, choreography and dynamic off ice.  All skaters are welcome from all clubs. No synchro experience necessary.   • Lessons delivered for STAR 1-4 Skate Canada Tests in Freeskate, Skills and Dance.
  • 45 minutes of group instruction delivered by a Mariposa Coach per day.

Off Ice Jump Class provides an excellent opportunity to work on the jump technique that skaters learn on the ice.  Off-Ice jump sessions are scheduled prior to skating sessions to simulate competition warm-up.

Spring Pre Canskate 2019

Pre Canskate is designed to teach skaters the fundamentals of Balance, Agility and Control. Pre Canskate is a fun environment with bright colours and age appropriate teaching aids. As skater begin to be able to get up and move without assistance, they will be moved to a group within the canskate session to allow them to progress at their own pace.  In the Pre Canskate program it is our goal to teach skaters independence by being able to get up on their own and balance without assistance while providing a fun and safe atmosphere for them to learn.

Spring Canskate 2019

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Taught by NCCP-trained professional coaches, assisted by trained program assistants.

CanSkate Private Lessons

Canskate Private Lessons are designed to help skaters reach their goals by giving skaters personal attention in conjunction with the group instruction already provided. This program has limited enrollment. Our coaches at the Mariposa School of Skating are National Coach Certified level 1-5 and work with skaters from beginner to World and Olympic level. Day Ice

Mariposa School of Skating has Day Time “Ticket Ice” available for skaters September – June. We operate Monday to Friday 6:30am – 3:30pm. Monthly, weekly, daily and session rates are available for skaters. All Monthly, Elementary Part Time, Weekly, and Daily passes include unlimited ice and off-ice programming.
