My Year At Mariposa

In June of 2013, I travelled to Barrie, ON for the Mariposa School of Skating’s Annual Seminar, and a couple weeks of summer school. Knowing the world-class skaters that had come out of Mariposa, the nature of the sport, and my ability at the time, I was nervous that I’d be out of place. As soon as I walked through the doors, I was at peace with the friendly atmosphere and the staff’s willing enthusiasm to help skaters achieve their goals.

It’s now summer of 2014 and I’m still here! The access to everything a high performance athlete needs, essentially at your fingertips, was the reason my parents and I decided for me to complete my grade 11 year of high school in Barrie. I attended the Innisdale Secondary School co-op program at Mariposa.

This year has changed my life. Not only has my skating technique improved, but the life lessons I’ve learned through elite level training, living away from home and competing, are so valuable and applicable to many areas of life. Coaches at Mariposa are encouraging, persistent and collegial, creating a friendly yet hard-working environment.

I’m extremely thankful for every moment spent here. No matter what’s in store for my future, Barrie will always be a home away from home for me. Thank you Mariposa!

Over the past 2 years our hockey team has participated in Mariposa’s skating program as part of our team development. I have observed immediate and long term results from each of our players edges, agility and Transitions. The results have been remarkable and as a coach I firmly believe in the skill of skating as critical foundation to any player. We will continue to invest our teams development money with Mariposa now and in the future. Mariposa’s staff is world class and nothing compares to the Team Edge and Balance Program!
