Why Mariposa School of Skating?

Something For All Ages and Levels

The Mariposa School of Skating is a full service training centre. We welcome skaters of all ages and skating disciplines from our local area or around the world to train with us for any length of time.
We have a coaching team and a variety of diversity skating programs we excel at delivering, from elite competitive figure skating programs to learn to skate to hockey skating programs to our RVH Therapy on Ice.  Skating champions like Brian Orser, Elvis Stojko and Jennifer Robinson put Mariposa on the map as an internationally renowned school. Mariposa is a full-service training centre that offers top level instruction for every age and level of skater. W

Our Internationally renowned school is THE destination for skaters looking to improve their skating!

Through our Performance Galas with the Barrie Huronia Rotary Club, our golf
tournament, Innisdale Secondary School Christmas shows and more.  We have collected $1million for RVH, over $180,000 for the Alzheimer Society, $100,000 for the building of the Barrie Molson Centre and more.

Winning legacy and bright future

Founded in Orillia, Ontario in 1973 by Doug Leigh and Tom Harrison, the school moved to Barrie in 1988 to accommodate the needs of world class skaters while establishing a campus at the Allandale Recreation Centre. Home to National Champions, Olympic medallists and World Champions from around the world, the school has seen success in Singles, Ice Dance and Pairs with champions like Brian Orser, Elvis Stojko, Jeff Buttle, Jennifer Robinson, Jacinthe Lariviere & Lenny Faustino.

David Islam and Paul Matheson became the co-owners in June 2017 to continue the strong legacy that has been built at the Mariposa School of Skating.

Power Skating Spring 2024

Program runs for 5 weeks

  • All skaters must pre-register for each class online and then check-in at desk upon arrival.
  • All sessions max 30 skaters
  • All sessions will be divided into groups according to the skaters level.

Spring Pre-Canskate 2024

Pre-CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Skate Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Pre-Canskaters must be 2-4 years of age.  If your child is under 6 years of age and has completed the PreCanskate Ribbon, they may register for the CANSKATE program. Taught by NCCP-trained professional coaches, assisted by trained program assistants.

Spring Canskate 2024

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Skate Canada’s long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Canskaters must be 5 years of age OR passed stage one to do this program. If your child is under 6 and has received their CANSKATE RIBBON they may register for Canskate. Taught by NCCP-trained professional coaches, assisted by trained program assistants.

Spring Starskate (Bronze, Silver, Gold)

Starskate is Skate Canada's Figure Skating program designed to introduce skaters to a series of evaluation and performance opportunities as they progress through 10 Star levels to their Gold tests.  You will find BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD sessions here. There are four disciplines in Starskate which are designed to help develop a well rounded skater.

Annual ON ICE Seminar 2024

When a club sends 5 skaters to the seminar- they can send 2 coaches FOR FREE! The Mariposa Seminar is an informative and motivational week for coaches and skaters to learn new techniques or train existing ones.  The seminar runs daily with scheduled on and off ice classes. Daily group lessons cover dynamic warm-up, jumps, spins and edges while choreography, ballet, flexibility and strength classes are rotated throughout the week to enhance your skater's training. Daily group lessons cover:
  • Jump and Spin Technique
  • Edge, Turn and Artistic Classes
  • Ballet, Dance, Flexibility and Strength
  • Off ice Jump class
  • Lecture series
Daily group lessons cover dynamic warm-up, jumps, spins and edges while choreography, ballet, flexibility and strength classes are rotated throughout the week to enhance your skater's training. (Video recording of the sessions is permitted) Additionally, there is extra ice (ticket ice) that you can purchase if your skater would like to practice what they have learned during the day. While there are no group lessons during this extra time, some Mariposa coaches may be available for private lessons. For lessons please contact the coaches directly. (see coaches tab)

Annual ON ICE Seminar ADULT EDITION 2024

EARLY BIRD $399 + hst

Before March 1st 2024 (full payment required prior to March 1st) The Mariposa Seminar is an informative and motivational week for coaches and skaters to learn new techniques or train existing ones.  The seminar runs with a fluctuating schedule during the day with on and off ice classes.  Each day is a different lesson for the skaters and coaches as well as the opportunity to mingle and interact with participating skaters and coaches. Daily group lessons cover:

  • Ballet, Dance, Flexibility and Strength
  • Off ice Jump class
  • Lecture series
Daily group lessons cover dynamic warm-up, jumps, spins and edges while choreography, ballet, flexibility and strength classes are rotated throughout the week to enhance your skater's training. Summer School (Training Camp) 2024

The Mariposa School of Skating offers one of the best summer skating programs in the world. We offer programming for Singles, Pairs and Dance at all levels. By integrating both on and off-ice classes into each training day the summer program is designed to help skaters at all levels reach their goals.
Full Package includes:
  • 30 minutes off ice jumps Monday-Thursday
  • 2 Sessions
  • 4 off ice conditioning classes
  • Group lessons Monday-Thursday for BRONZE
  • Blades On Ice Class Monday-Thursday (SILVER, GOLD and Elite)

The Mariposa Summer camp is the only skating camp in the area to offer multi sport participation. Hosted at the Allandale Recreation Centre, a state of the art facility which offers a multitude of recreation and training services.  Spend your summer improving your physical development while learning valuable skills on land, on ice and in water!

Summer Supervision for Bronze, Silver Skaters 2024

This program is for BRONZE or SILVER Summer School Skaterss who would like 1/2 Day or Full Day supervision in the Mariposa Summer Camp in addition to their program.  The Mariposa Summer camp is the only skating camp in the area to offer multi sport participation.
